Welcome to Chula Vista University.  This site is dedicated to providing information regarding the long-proposed University campus in Chula Vista, California and the many and diverse benefits such a presence would bring to the border region of Tijuana and San Diego.

History:  Chula Vista has LONG contemplated an institution of higher learning.  Considerations of a UC and of a California State University have come on and off the table over the years.

Most Recent Plan:  To located a campus in Eastern Chula Vista that will include several private universities, rather than relying on the budget process of the California State Government.  The Universities can share costs for libraries, parking, security, etc.  Students will have a great diversity of resources and choices regarding classes and facilty.  Opportunities would include associate degrees, 4-year undergraduate degrees, and a range of graduate degrees.

Justifications:  1).  There is a large amount of empty land available.  2).  There is a national research laboratory on renewable energy arriving soon.  3).  SDSU is overpopulated, geographically out of land, and faces multiple lawsuits over its current proposal for expansion.  4).  Sweetwater Union High School and SDSU already have a Compact for Success enrollment agreement.  5).  The population of Chula Vista alone is greater than Salt Lake City, Utah and Cincinnatti, Ohio and is growing!  Including the population of the entire South Bay and students traveling from Mexico, it is clear that finding students to attend will not be a problem.  6).  The number of South Bay students completing four-year degrees is not as high as it should be.  7).  The University Campus would increase the usefullness of the SouthWestern College campuses that already exist, as their graduates would find a more seamless matriculation process as they move forward to advanced study.  8).  The recent opening of the South Bay Expressway makes the site readily accessable.  9).  The economic windfall for the SouthBay would be immense and diverse.  10).  Students enrolled in South Bay High Schools would have more tangible academic and career goals.  11).  High-paying employment opportunites would increase ten-fold.  12).  A positive future for the South Bay would be almost guaranteed.  13).  Unlike anything else, a University keeps a region on the leading edge of new trends, new ideas and new technologies.  14).  Academic conferences would bring the best and brightess from around the world to our area.  15).  A supply of educated employees will bring the world's best employers to our region.

Current Timelines:  The land most planners would like to use for this project is currently owned by several different owners and is subject to negotiations.  The San Diego Chargers also have interests in putting a new football stadium in the same general area.

Possible Universities to be Included:  Discussions about the campus have already mentioned several American Universities such as SDSU, SouthWestern College, and Point Loma Nazarene.  International institutions have also been mentioned.  The Technological Institute of Monterrey, Mexico (which already has accreditation in the United States) seems to be a natural fit.

Proposal for the Inclusion of an Asian University:  Jeff Bettger and Robert Stimson have proposed that an Asian University be included in consideration in the current planning for a multi-institutional university campus in Chula Vista.  Bettger and Stimson believe that including an Asian University would compound the benefits of the campus.  Their rationale is as follows:  1).  They believe that Asia's (most specifically, China's) importance to the world's political and economic future will only increase with time.  Building cooperation within an academic setting best serves everybody's interests.  2).  Asian languages, history, cultural, geography are vastly different from that of the United States and Mexico.  Students can best understand a concept by comparing it to something completely different.  For example, the Romance languages such as English and Spanish, do not have many of the semantic and syntactic structures found in Chinese or Japanese.  In this example, even a beginning knowledge of an Asian language may help a budding Linguist better understand a Romance language!  Given the current presence of many Asian Companies in the US and Mexico, and increasing interactions with the Pacific Rim countries, it is proposed that an Asian-based University should be considered for inclusion.

Vision:    The border region encompassing San Diego and Tijuana contains many unique conditions condusive to producing a world-renowned academic setting.  The area has the most heavily traveled international border in the world.  An historic economic interdepenence, which continues to add international partners from all parts of the world.  An already expansive cultural integration and familiarity.  An opportunity to focus research and training on renewable energy sources and environmentally-friendly manufacturing and construction processes.  A multi-institutional university campus in this setting would merit international attention!

Action Steps:   There are many important projects on the table in Chula Vista.  To name only a few, these include the Bay Front development, Third Avenue Business development, a Chargers Stadium, infrastructure development, public transportation options, etc.  We ask our leaders to consider the fact that none of these projects will have as far reaching and as important an impact as would the development of a University park in Eastern Chula Vista.  Given the vocal opposition to some of the other projects mentioned, we believe that the University Project has a far better chance of seeing completion.  Please ask your political representatives to "fast forward" the Eastern Chula Vista University project.  In sum, there is no better investment than to invest in the future.  Our Children are the Future.  The South Bay is the Place.
